BEFORE THE SCIENTIFIC BOOK DIES

The scientific book is an organism based on a delicate balance. Initial high costs (work hours required by the author, redactors, correctors, illustrators) are recovered just if sales reach certain number of units.
Photocopy at a first time reduces sales, and in this manner it contributes to price raising. Secondly, it cuts by the nip the economic possibility of producing new books, specially scientific books.
Under provisions of Colombian laws, photocopying a book (or a part of it) copyright protected is illegal. Therefore, every photocopy preventing purchase of a book, is a crime.
Photocopy is not only illegal, but it also threatens survival of a mode of transmitting science. Who photocopies any book, who male photocopy means available, who in any manner promotes this practice, is not only against the law, but also particularly is in the situation of the one who collects a flower of a protected specie, and perhaps is collecting the last flower of that specie. |
