HISTORY

A story that began with a question.
In 1987, Edgar Suárez Ortiz founded his first law firm with a clear conviction: businesses need high-quality legal support. But over the years, working closely with owners, partners, and family businesses, a question emerged that would change everything: why did well-managed companies, with strong lawyers and solid financials, end up falling apart during generational transitions?
The answer was not found in law. It was found in people. In the dynamics between family and business. In the conversations that never took place. In the agreements no one dared to propose. This understanding led Edgar to train in Family Systems Therapy and to specialize in consulting for family businesses in Barcelona—not as an academic credential alone, but as the conviction that business conflict has human roots that law alone cannot resolve.
In 1994, he founded Consultoría Empresarial Suárez & Asociados with a different vision: a firm that would integrate the legal with the human dimension. By 1995, it had already become one of the pioneering firms in Colombia in consulting for family and closely held businesses, publishing alongside Dr. Humberto Serna Gómez the book Family Businesses: Strategies and Tools for Their Sustainability and Growth, the first of its kind to address the Latin American context.
Today, with more than 30 years of history and presence in Colombia and Ecuador, Suárez Consultoría is an interdisciplinary firm of lawyers, psychologists, economists, administrators, and accountants—because no single discipline can fully understand the problem on its own. Our Bogotá office has become a space where owners, partners, and business families make the decisions that shape the future of their companies.
More than 30 years accompanying what matters most.
What sets us apart is not the number of years. It is what we learned along the way: that companies are not lost due to a lack of talent. They are lost when owners have no one they can truly talk to about their future. When decisions are postponed. When the agreements everyone needs never find the space to be built.
That is why our promise is not only technical. It is human: that you feel there is someone who understands what is at stake and who accompanies you with the rigor and warmth that such a moment deserves.

Pioneers in understanding that the problem of the family business is not only legal.
Since 1995, when few firms in Colombia were willing to speak about generational transition as a human issue rather than only a legal one, Suárez Consultoría was already working in that space. Not because it was a trend, but because what we observed in the families and closely held companies we supported showed us that conflict has roots that law alone cannot resolve.
That conviction took shape in a book: Family Businesses: Strategies and Tools for Their Sustainability and Growth, published alongside Dr. Humberto Serna Gómez and edited by Temis. It was the first of its kind to offer tools designed for the Latin American context, integrating the family, business, legal, and wealth dimensions into a single model.
Today, we support family and closely held businesses in Colombia and Ecuador with that same founding vision: that the continuity of a company depends as much on its legal structures as on the quality of the conversations that take place within it. That is what makes us different. And that is what we have been building for more than 30 years.
